The biggest problem with the show is honestly the writing, and while that does go to the cast members, the cast members can only execute what the Writers do.
In the past SNL especially in the early years had incredibly strong counter culture writers. I think now they have pretty bread and butter comedy skit writers. The fringe edgy comedy worked really well in the old days because a lot of the laughs came from shock and not being predictable.
Now the comedy is predictable and you see the same line of skits as you see in the average 30 minute sitcom.
I think the cast is decently talented, not compared to 20 to 30 years ago, but the writing is terrible.
