re: Drouin vs MacKinnon

I was in Halifax last week for work and the Mooseheads are huge there. The locals seem think that their team will not lose another game before going to the Memorial Cup in Saskatoon. They have swept their first and secound round series vs. Saint John and Gatineau, by a total score of 48-9.

Anyhow, I asked the locals who would they take if they were the Flames. Overall, there was alot of hesitation when the question was asked, as it appears not to be a clear cut #1. However, the general comments for each player were as follows:

1) Drouin (Playoffs 8GP, 4G, 11A, +10, 2 PIM, 29 shots, Faceoffs 2/9 @ 22%) - Excetional puck handling skills at any speed and exceptional playmaker. Very quick and can turn on the dime. Extraordinary vision on ice.

2) MacKinnon (Playoffs 8GP, 3G, 12 A, +8, 4 PIM, 36 shots, Faceoffs 114/181 @ 63%) - More of a shooter vs playmaker. Heavy shot. Top notch acceleration from a standing point. Multi dimensional as he can play both a finesse or rough and tumble game.
Interesting enough, there's a guy by the name of Stephane Fournier that is leading the team in playoff scoring ( 8 GP, 11G, 8 A, + 9). He's 6'3" winger, 210 llbs undrafted.

Regular season stats:

Drouin (5'11", 176 llbs) - 49 GP, 41 G, 64 A, 105 pts, +48, 32 PIM, 173 shots, FO 52/122) = 42.6%; Shootouts 2/4

MacKinnon (5 '11", 179 llbs) - 44 GP, 34 G, 43 A, 75 pts, +40, 45 PIM, 201 shots, FO 504/970 = 52%; Shootouts 1/3

Overall, the locals favoured Drouin, due to the high level stick handling, play making ability, and being more creative than MacKinnon which will be important in shootouts. Also, MacKinnon's style of play is more susceptable to injury.

It boils down to this: If Flames want a highly skilled player in all facets of the game, take Drouin, as it appears he has more of a creative side, which will be extremely impotant in shootouts. If Flames want a centre to take face offs, a scorer and someone who can also play a rough and tough game, take MacKinnon.
