If you're not moving until next July, I'd wait until next year's Soundsaround Big 4 sale. Always the cheapest for TV's. I bought a Sony 42" Grand Wega at what I thought was a cheap price of $3,000. Soundsaround had it for $2,800 at the sale, with a stand.
That window will also cause havoc with ambient light and picture quality, so some blinds for those afternoon hockey games might be needed too.
One thing to keep in mind - a TV might be 14" but count on another 3" for the wires and cords to stick out the back.
Your depth & size requirements have you in a bit of a bind. Most CRT based solutions won't meet your depth criteria. LCD projection will likely check in at about $3000 but get you close to your size requirements. One other piece of experience that I can pass on is that once you get an HDTV you'll have a burning desire to upgrade all your inputs to HD quality. A Shaw digital HD terminal is $333 after rebates typically, and an upconverting DVD player is about $250 right now. Factor in another $200-$250 for cables, assuming you go for mid end ones, and have 50% of what you'll need already (depending on how many components you have).
Stands are also surprisingly expensive. I recommend the Ikea Stormark for all of $85. Far better priced than the $300 Sony ones. Fits 16:9 TV's great.
Also something to consider is a warranty. Given the new state of LCD / DLP technogy I opted for a ($500) 5 year on my new set. Read the review sites and you'll see a lot of gripes, which is why I went this route for a little bit of comfort.
So at the end of the day, my "$3000" TV really cost me more around $4,500, after the above and yes, GST.
My advice: start sucking up to the wife now (if it's applicable)
