Whether its a stitch up or not, is irrelevant that's up to the courts to decide. There's a warrant out for his arrest with a demand for extradition. I would think that Sweden which has a extradition treaty with Australia would demand his return if he pops up his head there.
I don't know if there's laws against running for Senate if your under indictment, but I doubt that the Australian authorities would be thrilled if he ran for election.
If he's that confident that he's innocent then he should go back to Sweden and face the trial and get the case thrown out. Then return home and run for office.
I doubt that the U.S is using Sweden as some elaborate legal track to get Assauge back to the States.
