If we draft a franchise player, why can't we just go with that?
With the old guard on its way out, the young guys are going to get a legitimate chance.
We have Brodie and Gio with some decent guys in the pipeline on defence.
Baertchi, Backlund, Gaudreau, Horak, Jankowski on their way up front.
I think by Sept of 2013 we are going to have 75 percent of the pieces that will bring us back to respectability.
With those pieces in place why not still try and be competitive? And just take the likely high draft picks as gravy?
As long as we don't mortgage that future for the present competitiveness.

Because the Flames don't just need a franchise player, they need everything, a new goalie, a franchise center, a decent 2nd line center, a first line defensive pairing at least one decent winger to go with the franchise center, if the Flames score home runs on all three 1st round picks they will still be short a player or two.
