I am not saying the Kipper wasn't a great goalie. Its been known for years that he is a little "different". Plus, even if he was to retire at the end of the season, some teams are willing to give up assets on a rental.
I am pretty sure that if he retired immediately upon being traded, the league (and the other team involved) would have to get involved somehow. I think that it is much more ethical to be up front and say "yeah - I'll just pack it in before I'll uproot my family to be a rental, so don't bother trying to trade me."

Not knowing anything more about his personal life other than that he's already got kids, and the most recent had complications, being a playoff rental is probably the worst thing that could happen to him personally right now. And if he has reservations about signing an extension at his age because he's not sure he could live up to the expectations, then there really isn't anything to negotiate.

If faced with his (reported) options of uprooting and/or being away from his family for a few months under the circumstances, or getting an extension that he's not confident with, I'd pick retirement too.
