He had no trade potential if he was going to retire anyway.
Scenario 1: Kipper says he'll retire if traded. Doesn't get traded. Retires.
Scenario 2: Kipper doesn't say he'll retire if traded. Gets traded. Retires. Deal is nullified. Doesn't get traded after all. Retires anyway.
Same result, but one way is a lot messier. I'm not sure why anyone would think that there was ever another outcome, especially the way that his contract was structured.
