NHL contracts can't be modified and often don't contain every little stipulation. We have no idea how many assurances Kipper received prior to signing his contract and assurances he received throughout his contract.

Kipper's contract is a bit weird in the way its structured. That last year for little money suggests he doesn't intend to play his final year. The expiration of his NMC last seasons suggests Kipper agreed to the possibility that if things aren't working out he would be traded to another team this season.
