This "announcement" makes me wonder if this was the plan all along?

So Flames brass knows Kipper will retire end of 2013 season. Management, ownership, they all know this. Iggy is signed here for the same amount of time.

Maybe going back even five or six seasons, this year was always going to be the year they ditched win now for a rebuild.

We picked up Ramo last year, who could possibly be our goalie next year, but not this year. Perhaps O'Reilly was really part of a rebuild, not a part of win now (although he functions in both capacities).

I do not know whether I'm right about this, but if I am, it could explain why we didn't do this two, three years ago. While the Flames had a franchise goalie and franchise forward, we were in win now - and the brass knew the expiry date on these players, and prepared accordingly.

Food for thought, anyway. That would be one seriously long-term plan. And not necessarily a wise one either.
