The Sea of Red was born during the 1986 Flames-Oilers series (hereafter, the greatest playoff series ever played). Play by play guy Don Whitman, observed that most Oilers fans were wearing white that year and remarked towards the end of game 2 that the Oilers would surely face a 'Sea of Red' when they came to Calgary for game 3.

And, in fact, they did.

Thus endeth the lesson.
Exactly, except...the Oilers were asking their fans to wear hats to the games because they were going for their third straight Cup (a hat trick). So the Sea was born to thumb our noses at that nonsense.

Was it Whitman who suggested the red? I knew it was someone on the CBC, but for some reason I thought it was one of the hosts -- whoever was in the role that Kelly Hrudy has now.

Either way, it's the last time anyone on the CBC had a good idea.

Winnipeg, of course, had the White Out, which they started in 1987 as a reaction to facing the Sea of Red in the first round.

I also remember watching the 1987 World Series, when the Cardinals had their own Sea of Red. In fact, during one of the games, I remember seeing a fan holding a sign that said something like, "Hey Cowtown, how's this for a Sea of Red?" That made me laugh.
