Not sure if this has been mentioned, but my guess is that the Flames insistence on a first lowered the value of the prospects. In both trades. Rattie or Cole or whoever probably were in play, but the pick would have been lower.
Probably in consultation with the amateur scouts, they placed high value on the high draft picks.
Similar thought process as Weisbrod encouraging the trading of our first last year, until he saw Jankowski
