Wideman plays 5 more minuts a game and has 14 more points this season and you aren't going to get a 40 point defenseman for chump change. Defensively the entire Flames team sucks but that's more to do with the failures of the coaching staff as Brent had pretty well the same group always in the top 10-15.

That contract reminds me a lot of the Sarich contract that never really worked out that great for the Flames. Smid is not a bad defenseman but I wouldn't lock him up for four years.
