Iggy back to the Bruins?
The Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has filed a grievance over the Jarome Iginla trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins claiming the Bruins had a trade with the Calgary Flames for the all star right winger. He claims on Wednesday March27th, around 12 noon ET, Flames GM Jay Feaster informed him and his staff that they had won “the Iginla sweepstakes”. As a result, Gary Bettman has deemed Jarome Iginla ineligible to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins indefinitely until a 3rd party arbitrator has reviewed both cases and renders his decision.
This is reminiscent of the Eric Lindros saga in the summer 1993 when the young hockey star was traded to both the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers. However, the main difference between the two trades is that the Iginla trade happened during the season so a swift decision is preferred. Sources indicate the NHL would like a decision made before the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday April 3rd. However, even that is not guaranteed. The ongoing grievance will affect how both the Bruins and Penguins proceed with this year’s trade deadline. April Fools!
