I had season tickets to the Blazers that year, and watched him play about 45 home games that year. He was strong on the boards, quick skater with a good shot. Was also one of the bet fighters in the league in his age group. I thought he had more potential than Shane Doan. Difference was that Doan was a year older and more mature physically. Doan played on the Blazers second line and got a lot more PP time. Iginla was on the third line, and not a lot of PP time. I remember the hockeynews had Iginla and Berard as the two 5 star prospects of that draft.
I remember another guy Steve Kelly who was all speed....the Oilers took him 6th overall ahead of Doan who's name was being chanted by the crowd. Doan was the Memorial Cup MVP, but comparing 17 year old Doan to Iginla...Iginla was a much better scorer. Doan though was physically ready for the NHL after his draft year.
