Every year at this time a list starts circulating of top college UFAs - players that were never drafted. Yet when all is said is done the vast majority of them never become NHLers.
In most cases there was a reason they weren't drafted. Yes, players slip through the cracks, like Tyler Bozak who has become a decent NHL player. But for every Tyler Bozak there;s a handful of Matt Gilroy's or Evan Oberg;s.
That has nothing to do with "taking a shot at college players."
The broader point is that Hanowski is a long shot not because he's a college player, but because he was a 5th round pick who has shown signs of regressing.
Try not to read between the lines too much.
