I would say at best it is a lose-lose for both teams deal.
Butler is below AHL replacement and should not be playing at all in the NHL. He is at best the 8th best defenseman on the team right now and maybe below Breen as well.
Byron is useless in terms of NHL and showing 0 signs that will change.
And we gave up a 2nd round supposedly to try and give Brad Richards a god awful contract, that thankfully he declined.
Buffalo may not have faired much better with Regehr but the fact that the trade brought 0 useful parts while giving up a 2nd round pick is a loss in my books.
