They both play for terrible teams and unless you watch Buffalo play every game I'm not sure how you can say Butler is playing better. Butler is downright awful, I find it hard to believe Regehr would be playing worse. It would take an amazing level of suck to be out sucking Butler. If it wasn't for Babchuk I think he'd be our worst defensemen.
That trade was pretty awful. We gave up a 2nd round pick as well, can't get much worse than that, but wait we also got Ales Kotalik so I guess it did get worse.

How is Butler better? Well for 1 he can actually skate still, and is also 6 years younger. Also I have watched a number of Sabers games in the last few years. Regehr hasn't magically gotten faster and better since joining Buffalo.
I will give Regehr this though, he is still a mean SOB and does a pretty ok job of clearing the front of the net. But as far as outlet passes, ability to hold the line, and stick work goes Butler is the better player and he is way cheaper.
We didn't "also get Kotalik". We got rid of Kotalik in that trade.
