Yes, the Flames hold his rights, but it lasts past the end of the season, to August 15th. Any college pick you only have their rights, they aren't allowed to have a professional contract and play NCAA hockey. It's a very common situation that Hanowski is in.
Schultz was different because he forgo his first year of college hockey after the draft to play Junior A, then went to college. This created a loophole where Anaheim only had negotiation rights until June 24th. Different situation.
