Its not necessarily a lesson about rebuilding either. It's a lesson for most organizations at every level. The best and most sustainable organizations through the long term won't get too emotionally attached to people, will regard them pragmatically as assets and will categorize those assets as emerging, stable or declining talent.
Iginla's value to the Flames became weighted more about business, the sustainability of the season ticket base and its eventual transition to a new building. Too much reliance on that and not enough on the simple fact you've eventually got to win to impress people and keep them happy.
Players get old. They fade away. You've got to work around that. Or you end up being in a forced rebuilding phase while you're moving to a new building.
