You guys all do realize that Iginla's chances of playing for the Flames in the 2013-14 season hasn't changed right? He could have walked in the off season for a contender (he deserves this) or even come back with a ring on next season (his family could stay here). Either way, the chances of him back on the Flames for next season or seasons after hasn't changed.
There's no conditional picks, and it's quite clear we aren't going to benefit from Iginla's services this season.
As much as I'd have loved to get a steal back, the reality is... this season is a loss with or without him. Whether he's playing for the Flames next season or not hasn't changed. Maybe he'll sign a 1-2 year with the Pens if they don't win this year... who knows.
I guess what I'm saying is... this hasn't sunk in yet. He's been rented, but he's not gone. Until Iginla retires with another jersey on, he's still our Captain in my eyes.
The fact that we have 2 1sts and 2 prospects to show for our generous rental is great!
While I'm not saying this is a guarantee (or that I'll give Iginla in red again for 2013-14 high odds) I still think this is a great return for what (in the Pens eyes) is a few months of Iginla.
Far better than what Morrow returned (I as well immediately screamed 'Morrow returned more!' until I re-evaluated) but IMO Hanowski, Agostino and a 1st gives the Flames a higher probability of turning in an impact roster player than Morrow (who was having issues in the Pens system already) and a lower draft. Not that I wouldn't have loved Morrow, it's just an alternative POV considering we're talking in unknowns and theory already.
As a London boy, I really would have loved to have Harrington or Maata come back though. Love watching those guys play, and would have been awesome to pick up a off-white London jersey with a Flames prospect on the back
