He didn't come out and say "On April 28th I am going to retire from playing in the NHL" He's basically said that "I am still going to play in the NHL as long as I get my way. If you trade me (even though you have the right to trade be) I'm not going to report to that tem and I"ll retire. It's my way or the highway"
He's acting like a 5 year old. If he plans on retiring, he should just retire and it really seems underhanded that he's manipulating the Flames because the only ones who suffer from this are the team and the fans.

Actually a lot of people do that in real life. If the circumstances of their job change they choose to leave that company or if they are old enough/have enough money they just retire.
