I liked the way he character was portrayed in his final episode going from the ruthless hateful Merle to someone that still had a glimmer of humanity left in him.

The only thing that was a let down is how the Governor just flat out dominated them in their battle that was BS. We are talking about a guy that cut off his own hand to surrive a roof top of zombies.

The Governor should have been stuck at least a couple times with Merle.
The writers are making the Governor like Jason escaping death all the time he is only missing the Goalie mask.

We are also talking about the Governor, who doesn't really give two shakes about anything right now. Merle was drunk after drinkinging half a 26 of whiskey and the Governor is fighting like he has nothing to lose.
Merle gets ambushed by a zombie and then gets ambushed by the Governor, so was it realistic to me that he got owned in that fight? Short answer is yes.
Also the zombies were never on the roof since they chained the door shut. He cut off his hand so he didn't die of exposure/dehydration on the roof.
