If you just let your kids do exactly what they want, they won't have much exposure to the range of things they could be doing. Of course you give them options, but letting them focus on only one activity for 12 months of every year shouldn't be one of them. Why did you bring up video games to begin with?

The point is that forcing children to do x or y is a recipe for disaster. I played with kids who did not want to be there and they were miserable.
