Nothing wrong with trading him on the road. The idea that all they'd do is give the guy a phone call and then truck him off when the Bruins don't even play until the 27th would be pathetic, especially when lesser players have been traded in the past and missed their opening games.

What part are you missing?
He needs to be part of the process when and if a trade happens. There's no blindsiding happening here.
And if /when he's traded, he reports to his new team.
"You've set every major record this organization has, spent your entire career here, done everything for the community, took us to the Finals on your back. . . . You're traded. Here's a phone, call your kids. Your plane arrives in 30 minutes. See ya!"
makes it sound like you think they'd hand him a phone and a van would pull up and tell him to get in like he had no choice in the matter.
