I think there is lots of blame to go around on the Flames. I am not a fan of blowing up the team, but after watching last nights game I really think it is time to trade some players. I think that the key guys that really need to move are Cammalleri, Tanguay and Iginla for forwards, Butler and Smith for defencemen.
The forwards I mentioned just do not seem interested in competing in all zones of the ice and could probably gather you some draft picks and/or hard working type of players who will help out on the defensive end. Tanguay only wants to make the pretty play and Cammalleri only wants to shoot no matter what the play dictates. Iginla may get you some decent assets (the phone calls should be made now even before he gives you permission to move him) and if the offer isn't good then don't trade him. I am not saying he shouldn't be traded but why trade him if you don't receive an NHL caliber player in return (by NHL caliber player I mean someone along the lines of Brandon Sutter type not Jordan Nolan type). I don't even care if Iginla walks at the end of the season if all he is going to get you is low caliber players and crappy draft picks at this point.
Butler and Smith may get you some lower draft picks and possibly the Flames could suck some team into believing they could help offensively. To me the best scenario would be to get a 5-6 Dman who is big and rough.
The team needs to retool with some younger players who have some grit and can skate (Lance Bouma type of guys). If they can secure some of these types they can mix them in with the newer guys like Stempniak/Hudler/Backlund etc., and retool a bit while they develop some of the recent draft picks. If last nights game showed me anything it was the total lack of effort by the "top" players. I also believe that if you can get a 2nd round pick and a player for Kipper you trade him. He seems frustrated and lacking drive at this time and to me it is time to move on from him.
I guess what I am trying to say is there definitely needs to be some changes, but the Flames and fans may be seriously overrating what the team will get for these assets. I would rather trade Iginla and Kipper for draft picks that for the type of package the Oilers received for Ryan Smyth a few years ago, basically wasted contracts. Let them go and use their money to sign some decent NHL players.
