You bring up excellent points regarding what to look for when choosing a CrossFit gym. You can open a "Box" with nothing more than a Level 1 certification, which consists of $1000 and a weekend of classes. Granted, you have to display a working knowledge of common movements, as well as pass a written exam. Affiliation and authorization to use the CrossFit name is a bit more difficult. 
There are certainly trainers at my gym that I trust more than others, but in the end, the gym is a reflection of the owner. If the owner isn't concerned with proper form, the trainers won't be, either. I'd recommend trying out a few different boxes, I'm sure there are a million in NYC. 
I will have to disagree about the culture, though. Last week, a participant with a top 5 score in the Open workout disqualified for not adhering to movement standards. The gym that judged the workout was also banned from judging any more Open workouts this year. This came about from outcry within the community.
Anyway, I'm not here to recruit people. It works for me, and it makes me better at my job. If people are interested, do some research, and check out a gym for yourself. If you're not comfortable, check out another. If you're not interested, cool. It's not for everybody.
