Could it simply be the differing types of gangs in the two countries? I don't have any concrete evidence for this but in Canada the major gangs are things like Biker and Native gangs so naturally we hear more about them on the news. In the states however it seems like the news focuses more on African-American/Latin type gangs. Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass though.
