Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association announces year-end awards, name Flames prospects Gaudreau and Gilles two of the biggest winners.

Boston College sophomore forward Johnny Gaudreau was named Player of the Year by the Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association on Wednesday while UMass Lowell head coach Norm Bazin was named Coach of the Year and Providence goaltender Jon Gillies captured the association’s Rookie of the Year award.
Gaudreau was also a unanimous selection on the HEWBA’s All-Hockey East First Team while his BC teammate, Mike Matheson, along with forwards Danny O’Regan (Boston University) and Kevin Roy (Northeastern) were unanimous choices for the HEWBA’s All-Rookie Team.

Gaudreau led Hockey East with 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) appearing in all 27 of Boston College’s league games this season. He scored the fifth-most goals in conference play and also led the league in assists. The sophomore was tied with his BC teammate, Steven Whitney, for the most game-winning goals (5) in the league and his 100 shots on goal were second to only UNH’s John Henrion.
