Tip some of you may want to try out to alleviate traffic: do not build 4 way intersections. Only build 3way T intersections. I have a city that has only 3 way intersections currently and no streetcars, and traffic is not a problem for me currently.

Also, the other tidbit I have found is to mix residential and commercial zones together. When people can go to work, go home, go shopping and go home in the same day, they are happy. If you have commercial zones in the center of the map, it takes time for them to get there and if they don't make it by the end of the day, they will be unhappy.

You also have to keep an eye on the detail population tab. Most important "graph" in the game. Tells you how many are unemployed, or how many jobs are unfilled and what wealth level they need to be. Extremely helpful in planning the city.
