As I seem to recall, Kirkman stated that he didn't want to explore the cause of the outbreak or provide definitive answers as to what was happening in the wider world - the story is the characters and how they are dealing with the situation without any of that knowledge. Not claiming this as gospel, I just seem to recall reading that somewhere...

While I would love to see more of the outer world & what's happening, I like the whole "you see the people you see" pov of TWD - their world isn't large & interconnected like it was before the ZA, it's small, narrow & deadly. The tension caused by their predicament is what makes the show work for me! (Well that and Norman Reedus....LOL)
