This is the key here - merely making the playoffs shouldn't be considered good enough.
With the position the Flames are in, 8th spot is pretty much the best possible outcome. And we have to pass 7 teams to get there. And we're already in 15th - 5 points back of 8th. And the reward is a Chicago team that currently has twice as many points as us right now.
Even if you think this team can go on a run, this isn't the year where you slip into 8th and do some damage. You could argue that last year was as there really wasn't a dominant team in the West. This year there clearly is and if you look at all these things from an intellectually honest perspective it's pretty obvious that it's not worth the risk.
