Based on what? What signs do you see that suggest this team is anything but what we see in the standings?

I mean sure, when you look at Nashville and San Jose, you can say that those teams have had it before so nobody is going to be surprised if they have it again. When you look at Edmonton you can at least say that their core is young, they could really start putting it together any day now. (Heh.)

But us?

This team has failed to make it to the playoffs three times in a row already. We're doing about the same as last year (10-11-4 vs. 11-12-2), but our +/- is notably worse. When we lose, we get blown off the ice, so it's not like we're just having some bad bounces. Our two supposedly best players have been carrying us for almost a decade now, so they're not going to give us something we haven't seen before. Our offseason signings are doing pretty much as expected already. We've been collecting points at pretty much the same pace for the whole season. I mean okay, we've gone from winning about 1 game in 3 to winning about 2 games in 5, but we're also mostly winning at home, and we have 3 more road games than home games left in the schedule. And as a lot of people said in the midseason player evaluation thread, most players on this team have been giving about the results that were expected of them.

I would really like to think that there is more to this team, but I need something more than wishful thinking for that. If you've got something, please share.

We' have the smallest and second oldest team in the NHL. That alone tells you a lot about our playoff chances.
