I thought it was like 10 issues or something, I know it wasn't Age of Apocalypse.. but still.

They revisit the dystopian future afterwards, but the original story is only 2 issues long. Keep in mind that comics were longer and more densely packed with dialogue back in the day.

Basically the whole story is:

Scene in the future with Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. Everyone else is dead after the world has turned on mutants and sparked a war due to an assassination. Kitty Pride possesses her old self to stop this. The x-men confront the assassination team and thwart the plan. The end.

The future here becomes an "alternate" timeline that does not cease to exist despite Kitty's success.
