I call it the "Plot sized ammo box".
A prime example was when they started clearing the prison.
They didn't want to waste ammo clearing out the inside of the prison, but when it came to clearing out the yard, where they could have easily stood on along the fence (inside the perimiter, but outside the courtyard and picked off zombies withouth a single shot) they shot the place up from all sides.
Why? Because of the plot sized ammo box.
Shooting zombies en mass from a guard tower = cool scene
Standing at a fence stabbing zombies one at a time in relative safety = Boooring!
Therefore, the ammo box will be magically full, light 'em up Rick!
Running around narrow halls in the dark picking off zombies one by one with a gun and no real danger = Boooring!
Walking through the halls with just a machette and having to fight zombies hand to hand, plus you get to do that cool phalanx thinggy = exciting scene
Therefore, the ammo box is now running low....sorry Rick, looks like you're doing this one the hard way.
