I would limit the use of a debit card unless at a reputable bank. My ex got defrauded for north of $2500 using her card in Amsterdam, she was with Scotia and they essentially told her to pound sand.

At least with a VISA there is some form of protection for the consumer, and you won't be on the hook for fraudulent activities.
