After listenning to the rumblings of Sven having the lowest confidence problems in his career IE missing the net in a shoot out. Gaudreau, while not a guarantee to make the NHL is showing he could be a pretty darn good top 3-6 forward, but small and likely won't light up the NHL at the start. Likely we finish bottom 5 lets say we get lucky and draft McKinnon. All these prospects are going to need the guidance from an NHL'er who has been there done that. How do you fight through goal scoring droughts? Situational play? What does it take in the summer to stay in the shape Iggy does? What I would hope happens is that we receive a player, good prospect and a first rounder. Should that not be the case Iggy's value is still in his leadership of a guy who has been there and done that for some pretty darn good hockey players coming up. Maybe Hartley or a Tanguay or a Cammy can do that but none of them has done it for as long as Iggy, and likely don't have the stature that an Iggy does either.
In hockey, as in soccer. star players are generally lousy mentors to be frank, which is why they rarely do well as coach's, the guys you want as a mentor are the older grinders who have always had to work on every aspect of their game and never been able to take playing for granted, they are well versed in how to rise above adversity (being benched or demoted, sent back to Abby etc) in a way that the Iginlas and the like have not had to master.
