If Iginla was such a great role model for younger players, you'd think that would have been evident in their play over the last 10 years.

Young players don't need a Jarome Iginla to show them the merits of being in shape. If they haven't figured it out by the time they get to the big show, they probably never will. As for mentoring and leadership, you don't need a star player for that. Who was Iginla's mentor? Dave Lowery.

This notion that Iginla has tremendous value as a mentor for young player is just Flames fans grasping at straws. There's no reason to believe he is anything of the sort, nor that the Flames would be smart to spend $5 mil a year on a fitness coach.
