I talked to both my current bank and a broker. Basically every time the broker came to me with an offer the bank matched, not only the rate but also the overall package (e.g. extra payment options etc.). Eventually the broker conceded she couldn't do anything better than what the bank was offerring, but I wouldn't have gotten that deal if I'd just gone straight to the bank. Part of me felt bad that the broker had done some work and not got anything out of it, but I was upfront with her at the beginning that I was also talking to my current bank and that she'd have to beat what they offerred.
