Are there other sites that offer something similar to Reddit (I don't mean the cp)? I'm not a reddit user, but the idea of a site where there are a multitude of small communities that can be very specific to a single interest and still have an active user base is pretty appealing.
The argument in the OP seems reasonable to me and if there is an alternative I would prefer to use that. While CalPuck is good for many things I am generally an outsider here because of my location and alienation from local goings on. Nonetheless, I persist in my use because of the activity of the community.

Offering some not so dubious alternatives seems a better route to getting people off of reddit.

Edit: I just visited reddit for the first time and was able to instantly find a community of people talking about wine with a large discussions of biodynamics (which I'm currently doing an article on). While I still see the point of the OP I have to acknowledge that it is pretty cool to be able to find a community like that so quickly and easily.
