The lack of a #1C is beyond obvious at this point. I'm getting so sick of saying it and hearing it, that it may as well be "the need that shall not be named."
I'm not writing off Kipper just yet, and a mere top-5 dman isn't going to do much. These guys need a #1 D (similar to a Kronwall), or at least a really good #2 (like a Seabrook).
Regardless, the Flames aren't adding both a top C and a top D this season. Add in the fact that the goaltending is subpar (albeit not hopeless, since we all know what Kiprusoff can do when he's on), and their chance of making the playoffs is about as poor as the Oilers'.
Selling off veterans and getting a couple of skilled prospects and/or picks seems like such a no-brainer. Others have explained why this might not have happened.
