The Penguins drafted Crosby first overall in 2005 and won the cup four years later.
The Hawks drafted Kane first overall in 2007 and won the cup three years later.
Both the Penguins and Hawks only missed the post season one more year after drafting either players.
The Oilers drafted Hall in 2010 and are going to miss the post season for a third year after drafting him, their 7th in a row. At the time the Penguins and Hawks were playing in the finals the Oilers are again contending for picking first overall, their 4th lottery pick.
The Oilers all pointed to those two teams as shining examples of tanking to improve. It's apparently the exact opposite.
Meanwhile the Oilers have promoted both Kevin Lowe and Craig Mactavish.
Brilliant.
