Well we are Doctors of Optometry. So it is appropriate to refer to him as a Dr in the office.
We subscribe to evidence based eye care and are considered experts in the field. I would put Optometrists on par with dentists over Chiro's. The term Doctor simply means that you have a doctorate in the field.
I am sure he will not expect you to call him a doctor.
