I drove some cab in Calgary years ago. It was a good temporary job. The thing is if you're downtown and there are flags around, why bother taking a dispatch trip. If you do accept the trip, once you get there odds are the person is gone or the fare says let me finish my drink so it's costing me money and sometimes they never come out.
If you're outside downtown, it's probably best to take dispatch trips but even then when it's busy, they may have been sitting on that trip for an hour or more and they've found other transportation. What I'd do is take my share of dispatched trips but after getting say 6 no trips I'd rely on myself. The other thing is, say the trip is at the Cecil or the loser of some fight at the Back Alley, do I really want that hassle.
