One would think, but when you hear former GM's like Doug Maclean and Mike Milbury talking on TV, I tend to question the baseline intelligence needed to become a GM. Add in a few middling owners who likely get all their knowledge of the game from TV, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least a little bit of media influence when it came to decisions amongst some of the more poorly led teams.

Totally agree. Above average intelligence doesn't seem to be a requirement of being a GM as guys like Milbury and MaClean (although arguably two of the worst GM's of all time so not the greatest example of an average GM) got by on reputation and experience in hockey rather than being bright lights. Still though even they must have had faith in their pro scouts as well as an eye for talent so I'm not sure if media would have much effect on their decision making.
