I was not 'blown away' by the Matrix 2 after a first viewing, but really got into it after some internet discussions based on what it could be saying about contemporary issues and paralles of themes from ancient religions (mostly greek). It seemed to me, hey, there's a lot going on here behind the scenes. A lot of neat ideas. I was SUPER stoked to see Matrix 3.

Well we all know how that turned out. Matrix 3 was so bad on it's own, but the fact that they didn't do anything with the 'supposed' themes and ideas from Matrix 2, it made me hate both of them.

And I have to say, the special effects got real old, real quick. The fight scene was so over done it wasn't interesting past the first 30 seconds. Give me the asian style fighting they had in the first one.

Oh yeah, and SOOOOO predicable. Neo using his powers in the real world. EVen though I knew it was coming I felt gyped. And how they showed it as him seeing what he saw in the matrix but in red symbols instead of green? Holy lack of imagination.

I was hoping that they were going to be smart about this. That this was a hint that they were stuck inside a 'Matrix INSIDE a Matrix'. Smith did compare the humans to viruses in the first one. Perhaps their 'real world' especially ZION was really just a quarantene for the viruses? That would have been cool! But they didn't address this at all, leave any questions to this. Even if you tried to read into this an believe it, it still left you short.

The later two Matrix movies and episodes 1 and 2 of Star Wars are prime examples of what happens when you try to sell with effects. Pure crap.

The only movies I have seen recently with amazing special effects that didn't overshadow or kill the movie, or more likely just try to hide it's 'suckiness' where the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But of course, with an excellent novel like that, you don't have to worry about storyline. To his credit though, Jackson used sets and costumes and make-up brilliantly, where Lucas would have gotten lazy and used CG. You need a blending of the real and computer I think. CG should be used to make movies better, not simply make movies.
