New characters, interesting storylines, decent pacing, proper use of lightsabers... somebody that understands what makes a good story good happened to get involved.
Any advice on when it got good/what season I should start on?

I've liked it throughout, but starting in season four it took on a darker ebb. They had great story lines atatched to the fall of Ventress, the night sisters. The Krell four story arch was probably the best and darkest of the lot til this season. they still have some story lines that are kid friendly, this year they had a jedi children arc that turned out good in the end but started slow.
Even in the first few seasons they had some great story lines, the Manevolence sub plot was very good.
The last two arcs the first of which involving Darth Maul and Savage Opress were very good, you saw the death of a key character, some good fight sequences including the final reveal of Dath Sideous' abilities and the Death Watch. The last story line that ended last night involved Jedi betrayal, Ashoka on the run while being framed and Anakin growing more unhappy with the Jedi and a surprisingly emotional ending.
Season 4 and 5 are worth watching and selected story lines in the first three seasons are worth the time.
