He hasn't looked so good that it's a no-brainer to give him everything, so I can't bring myself to blame the coach for not giving unearned ice time to an unproven player. As frustrating as this might sometimes be to fan, it happens with practically every rookie. Coaches in the NHL are terrified of losing, and if you're unproven and look at all like you have trouble keeping up both ways on the ice, they're not going to give you the benefit of the doubt. You have to earn the coach's trust first.
I still think he's received plenty of opportunities. More than a typical rookie would, apart from some very highly ranked prospects.
