P
I'm concerned.
The Edmonton Oilers were forced into a rebuild. They tried to do this "re-tool" nonsense as well. They tried by trying to acquire Jagr. They tried with an offer sheet to Penner. They tried with the whole Heatley fiasco.
It failed. Miserably. Six (or seven?) years later, and they're still trying to make the playoffs.
Seriously, there's not much difference IMO with the current management of the Flames. The flames will be forced to rebuild, and by fighting the inevitable, it will take much longer.
I've said it before....the current predicament that the Flames are in is not a single individuals fault ( although I do blame ownership/management for not doing something about it sooner), but sometimes a change is simply needed. It has never been so apparent as it is now ( though I would argue that something drastic should have been done after the playoff series loss to SJ and maybe even after the loss to Anaheim).
Thornton was/is a great player, but Boston ownership understood a culture change was needed.
Naslund and Bertuzzi were great players, but Vancouver ownership understood that a culture change was needed.
Sundin was the franchise player, but Toronto understood (albeit too late) that it was time to turn the page.
It's time..not just for Iginla, but for many on this squad. It hasn't worked since 2004....almost 10 years ago!....and it certainly won't work now, regardless if they would have acquired or o'reilly.
The problem lies with the existing players in that locker room.
Turn the page. Move on.
