The Flames so badly need a centre. Even if ROR won't be a top line guy he is much needed here. Also the way that things seem to work lately with these guys, Calgary would have just missed the playoffs again. This means they would have picked out of the top 5 or so and thus would probably not end up with a franchise type player in the draft. Now, ROR may not be that franchise guy either but he is a semi known talent and he fills one of the holes desperately needing to be filled around here.

They can't. Have to keep him for at least one calendar year from the date of matching. This would also fall in past next season's trade deadline, so the very earliest the Avs could trade him, would be the end of the 2013/2014 season, and at that point, they'd be trying to trade a 6.5M RFA Center.
