I don't think the current situation is fair for either the team or Iginla. It really is like a stale relationship which neither party is able to end even though they should.
It's not cold and calculating to say this aloud. I think continuing on the current path of failure and mediocrity is humiliating for both. Iginla should look for a chance to do something positive late in his career and the Flames should admit that they're not very good and start concentrating on the future.
